For the first half of the game against Wolves, Liverpool looked like a side under pressure. But they still tried to pass the ball. The players looked liked they believed in their manager. The influence and impact of Dalglish has been enormous. Finally Agger is being given a run of games, being shown faith and belief. And he’s repaying this with quality performances. Aggar oozes class. Dalglish will not, and cannot let him leave. Torres is also finally getting back to his lethal best.

When Liverpool sold Alonso and Mascherano, the hole left behind was huge. It was impossible for Liverpool to recover in the short term. This is the main reason for their current league position and performances over the last twelve months. Gerrard could not carry the team. And he should not have been expected to. It was time for someone to stand up and be counted.

Over the last month Raul Meireles has started to make his mark. Under Hodgson he showed glimpses of his talent but looked unsure of his future in the team and the future of the club. In the last couple of games he’s been accused of giving up possession too easily and people have been quick to jump on his back.

Against Wolves he scored one of the goals of the season. In slow motion, you can see his technique and ability. But just as impressive was how he laid on Liverpool’s first for Torres. He showed coolness under pressure and a clinical footballing brain. It would have been easy to take on the strike himself. But he knew exactly what to do.

Some might say it was easy. but in that situation Meireles showed his quality. Liverpool have been fragile away from home, and in desperate need of a spark. Torres is giving it to Liverpool, but Meireles is the catalyst.

His passing is excellent. His commitment is total. When players are being accused of not being fit to wear the Liverpool shirt, Meireles is standing tall. When he makes a mistake, he does not hide. He’s making Poulsten and Lucas look like proverbial “water carriers”. The gulf in class is easy to see. Meireles came to Liverpool for roughly the same fee as Alonso, and is starting to make the same impact. Whatever is said about Hogdson, the signing of Meireles was a masterstroke.

They are still a long way from the level of Manchester United and Arsenal but Meireles can be Liverpool’s future, and future captain. They now have another top class midfielder. Someone who will anchor the team away from home, and at Anfield provide a base from which Liverpool can control the tempo of a game and dominate teams like they did in Dalglish’s heyday. The future is bright.
