Arsene Wenger has admitted he is closing in on Southampton whizz kid Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Arsenal will push through a £10m deal this week with the 17-year-old forward likely to rejoin Southampton on loan until the end of the season.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has been targeted by Manchester City, Newcastle and Liverpool but the England under-18 starlet has decided to join Arsenal.
“I think, if that is right, that is a very good decision,” said Wenger. “We will try now.
“We need an agreement with Southampton, we need an agreement with the player, and we are not the only ones on the case. But we try as hard as we can as I like him as a player.”

With an agreement in place with the League One club and confirmation that Arsenal is the player’s personal choice for where he wishes to continue his career progression, all signs point to the fact that the Gunners have once again attracted one of the best up and coming players around to make the move to the Emirates Stadium.
The Saints attacker has shown great maturity this season and has barely missed a game for Nigel Adkins side and the south-coast side are looking good for promotion to the Championship and the fact that the youngster will remain at Southampton until the season is over is clearly an ideal situation for all parties as it would have been unlikely that the 17 year old would figure in first team plans at Arsenal this term.
Chamberlain has a good footballing brain, excellent pace and the ability to make something out of nothing and has a bright future ahead of him and at the North London club he will be challenged by a number of other young Gunners players just for a chance to get into the first team picture and that is the kind of challenge that should motivate the England Under 18 international to do well.
The Portsmouth born starlet follows hot on the heels of previous graduates from the St Marys’ side’s academy which has produced the likes of Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott and the club has a host of other promising looking talents such as Adam Lallana who is also reportedly courted by interest from some Premier League sides.
