Manchester United are readying a move to sign Benfica left back Fabio Coentrao as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to build for the future at Old Trafford. The Portuguese international has been targeted by many of Europe’s elite clubs and looks likely to leave his Lisbon club in the summer.

Ferguson had been heavily linked with moves for left sided players Gareth Bale and Michel Bastos but has be now earmarked a move for a more realistic target of Coentrao. The 22 year old has been in sparkling form over the past 18 months and last term was pivotal in helping his side to a league and league cup double but is now apparently keen to move on.

Moves to bring Coentrao to Man United appear to be unrelated to the ongoing speculation surrounding French international Patrice Evra. The experienced left back has repeatedly stated his intention to stay at the club but his agent once again re-opened rumours of a potential move to Real Madrid by stating rather cryptically about the former Monaco star’s future “He’ll either extend his contract, or he’ll leave.”

Some sources believe that Benfica will listen to offers of around £22m for the quick thinking wing back and the Estádio da Luz look likely to lose fellow defender David Luiz who appears to be on his way to Chelsea this month.
