Reports in Croatia have emerged stating that Arsenal have won the race to sign young defender Sime Vrsaljko from Dinamo Zagreb for €15m (approximately £12.9m), and will loan him straight back to his current club.
Vrsaljko has just turned 19, and is capable of playing anywhere across the defence, with right back his preferred position.
He is widely spoken of as the best Croatian talent since Luka Modric, but in a day when UK media outlets linked Arsenal to Mamadou Sakho for £12m, would they really spend even more than that on a youth prospect?
The Croatian media report that Zdravka Mamica, Dinamo Zagreb’s president, travelled to London over the weekend to negotiate the deal, and was also having talks with Manchester United, Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool.
Mamica has been fairly vocal in talking up his club’s two young stars Vrsaljko and Mateo Kovacic, and whether he is just trying to generate interest in his players to secure the highest fee possible is as yet unclear.
If it is to go ahead though, Vrsaljko will provide cover across the defence – and would likely be groomed as Bakary Sagna’s replacement.
