Sport.co.uk understands Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema will be available in the summer with a number of top European clubs readying offers for the French international with the much-sought after striker eager to find regular first-team football.
Benzema, 23, has had a rollercoaster campaign producing in-different displays resulting in the forward struggling to hold-down a regular first team place despite some flickering performances of note.
With Madrid signing Emmanuel Adebayor on loan from Manchester City and the return of Argentine international Gonzalo Higuaín, Benzema is not guaranteed a first-team place and is seriously considering his summer options.
Benzema’s availability will alert Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool, while Manchester United and Arsenal could also be tempted to bid for the former Lyon striker.
In a short statement the player’s representative reiterated to Sport.co.uk that the forward would not leave the Bernabeu during January, however a summer departure was confirmed as a possibility.
“Karim Benzema will not be leaving Madrid and is not looking to move in January transfer window. In the summer we will see. But for now he is not seeking a move.” Karim Djaziri told Sport.co.uk.
News that Karim Benzema will be allowed to leave Real Madrid in the summer should come as no great surprise.
The French striker would almost certainly be surplus to requirements already if Argentine forward Gonzalo Higuain hadn’t been ruled out for the season with injury, but instead he must remain at the Santiago Bernabeu due to the lack of alternatives in his position.
Part of the reason that Real Madrid are prepared to sanction his exit is his meagre La Liga goal return.
Benzema only scored 8 times in La Primera Division in his debut campaign for Los Merengues, and has only notched 2 league goals so far this season.
His form in other competitions is far better – 5 goals in 6 cup appearances, 4 in 5 in the UEFA Champions League and 3 in 5 this season for France.
Sport.co.uk lists Chelsea, Manchester City as the favourites for Benzema’s signature – but surely there is no need for another forward at Eastlands.
Liverpool and Chelsea are both in the market for a top class forward this summer though – but the Reds will be worried by the heightened interest in Fernando Torres in West London – and they know if Benzema plays to his potential he can be nearly unstoppable.
The troubled Frenchman has struggled to find a consistency to his game in the Spanish capital though, and perhaps a change of scenery – and indeed country – will reignite his fire.
