Manchester United will move into the transfer market in the summer to replace goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

The veteran Dutchman confirmed on Thursday that he would be hanging up his gloves at the end of the season.

Van der Sar’s decision to call time on his illustrious career leaves Sir Alex Ferguson with a significant gap to fill in his starting XI.

The Old Trafford outfit have Tomasz Kuszczak and recent signing Anders Lindegaard waiting in reserve, but do not appear to have enough faith in either player for them to immediately become the new No.1.

Goalkeeping coach Eric Steele revealed that the Red Devils have a trio of players in their sights who they believe would slot in seamlessly and provide the essential last line of defence.

Steele said: “We could do it internally, but we have looked at the best targets and we have a nice one, two and three who we think can fill the job.”

Germany international Manuel Neuer and Van der Sar’s fellow countryman Maarten Stekelenburg have been touted as possible signings, along with Atletico Madrid youngster David de Gea.

Speculation suggested Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina could be a shock target for their Premier League rivals, while Juventus’ Italy international shot-stopper Gianluigi Buffon is another to have been linked with United.

Sir Alex Ferguson knows all to well just how important it is to have a safe pair of hands behind a back four and with that in mind the Old Trafford boss will think long and hard before he makes his move. Of the five named, some are realistic targets and others are non-starters even for a club of Manchester United’s obvious size.

Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina has pledged his future to the Anfield club and would not be crazy enough to consider making the move to a hated rival. Gianluigi Buffon has similarly stated his intention to stay in Turin so that leaves three realistic replacements.

David de Gea is a very promising youngster who is apparently courted by all and sundry but again it seems he wishes to stay at the Vicente Calderon for the immediate future but a move for Ajax giant Maarten Stekelenburg could be the most likely of this selection. The Dutch international showed his quality in the World Cup and given the Amsterdam sides financial struggles a move for the 28 year old could be a possibility.

Manuel Neuer is a player that has been linked with a move to Man United for some time and the German international is a very stable custodian and a move to Bayern Munich appears to have been ruled out by the player himself but the Schalke man appears to be keen to stick it out at his hometown club so may not be ready to leave this summer.
