Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will make a £19m bid to sign Bolton centre back Gary Cahill as the Emirates boss looks to strengthen his threadbare back line before the transfer window slams shut. The England international defender is also being chased by Chelsea after the failed to complete a deal to sign Benfica’s David Luiz.

Owen Coyle placed a huge valuation on his prized asset some weeks ago and then moved to bring in Middlesbrough defender David Wheater which led many to believe that the Reebok Stadium side were ready to cash in on 25 year old Cahill and whilst hitherto Arsenal have been unwilling to stump up the cash they will now try one last time to nab the former Aston Villa man.

Wenger finds himself with very few defensive options with Thomas Vermaelen still out injured and Sebastien Squillaci suffering some knocks and suspension worries the Gunners find themselves with very few options at the back as the club battles on four fronts this season.

The two London sides interest in Gary Cahill may spark the bidding war that Coyle would hope to see occur as Bolton look to help cover some of the heavy debts they have run up.
