Barcelona midfielder Xavi reckons that Arsenal’s influential star Cesc Fabregas will eventually complete his long-mooted switch to the Camp Nou, because it is his “ultimate dream” to return to the club.

The Spanish international left Catalunya for London in 2003 and has established himself as the Gunners’ captain, but the 23-year-old has never disguised his desire to return to his boyhood heroes at some point in his career.

When asked about teaming up with Fabregas at both domestic and international level, the Ballon d’Or finalist was unequivocal in his belief that one day the two will share the midfield for the Blaugrana.

To TV programme One to One, Xavi claimed: “His greatest desire is to return to the club. He would adapt very easily because he grew up here. His ultimate dream is to return to Barca, but then Arsenal and Barcelona have to agree. He is raised here, and has the DNA of Barcelona, but it is not up to us.”

On the prospect of Fabregas eventually becoming his successor in midfield, he continued: “It depends on when he comes, and what age I am. We could play well together as we do for the national team.

“I always say the same thing, my game is based on partnerships and I have the players that suit my profile and my qualities around me.”

At what point does this kind of thing become ‘tapping-up’? I would have thought that such a point was reached months ago by Barcelona but clearly UEFA are unwilling to do anything about the unscrupulous tactics adopted by the Catalan club as they look to take the Gunners captain back to the Nou Camp.

For the record, and in case anyone from the La Liga giants happens to be reading this, Arsenal have made it clear they will accept no offers for the Spanish international and no matter how many times a Barca player states “Cesc’s heart is with the club”, nothing will happen…for the time being at least.

The 23 year old has stated his intentions to win a major tournament with the Emirates side before he thinks about leaving, could that perhaps happen this season?
