New Chelsea striker Fernando Torres insists he wants to find the net against his old club Liverpool when the two meet on Sunday.
The £50 million striker’s departure from Anfield prompted some fans to burn shirts bearing his name but the 26-year-old is ready to rub their noses in it by scoring in his first game for the Blues.
With Liverpool fans already upset at his departure, Torres angered them further by speaking of his relief at joining a “top level” club in Chelsea.
“It is like the destiny,” Torres said at the prospect of making his debut against the club who sold him on deadline day.
“It is not perfect for me but we will see what happens and I only have good words about Liverpool. They made me a top player and gave me the chance to play at the top level.
“I will never say anything bad about Liverpool. I have been very happy there, but now the history is different and I am playing for Chelsea.
“If I have the chance to play, I will do my best for Chelsea and hopefully I can score.”
Will the Spanish international even get to start at Stamford Bridge on Sunday? Would Liverpool not have added a clause to prevent their former star taking on his former club, perhaps more importantly, will it be safe for the 26 year old to take part in the match so soon after his contentious and controversial exit.
Carlo Ancelotti may have to work out how best to operate Torres and his current striking options and it could be that the new signing doesn’t get a start straight away which would of course be strange after a £50m fee has been paid for his services.
Scoring goals doesn’t appear to be Chelsea’s problem this season. 42 in 23 games is a pretty healthy total so whilst clearly Torres is very much a lethal finisher will he get his chance instantly? Remember the former Liverpool goal machine netted twice for his former club in the previous fixture between the two sides.
