Gabriel Obertan has stunned Manchester United by handing in a transfer request.

Obertan, a £3million signing from Bordeaux 18 months ago, is said to doubt whether he can make the grade at Old Trafford.

The France Under 21 winger wants to return home in the summer halfway through his four-year contract.

Obertan, 21, has made 14 appearances for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side this season, scoring his first competitive goal in the Champions League tie away to Bursaspor in November.

But after playing in the 4-0 Carling Cup defeat at West Ham later that month, he was substituted at West Bromwich on New Year’s Day and again struggled to impress in Saturday’s FA Cup win at Southampton.

If this is true – and that is a big if, given no Daily Mail reporter would put their name to this story – Gabriel Obertan has shown no sense of logic at all.

Handing in a transfer request almost exactly as the window closed, he would have very little chance of a move elsewhere in time if he was to go in January.

The story says that he wants a move in the summer, but this would seem a most peculiar time to make that decision.

Why not wait until April or May to see how many chances you have been given and how well you have played?

Of course, Nani is in fine form on the right, Ryan Giggs shows no sign of faltering, Park Ji-Sung is due back from the Asian Cup and Antonio Valencia is soon back from injury, but Obertan has made a respectable 14 appearances this season, and has certainly shown he has talent.

He just needs to perform on a consistent basis, and as with fellow wingers Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani before him, that could come with time.

Surely it is also down to Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson to decide if he is good enough to play for them, rather than Obertan.

He is still just 21, and has plenty of time to improve.

If Obertan has indeed lost confidence in himself, perhaps psychological help can be given, but too many things about this story just don’t add up at the moment.
