Liverpool are reportedly preparing a summer offer for Benfica left back Fabio Coentrao and are putting together the ground work on a bid that the Merseyside club will be sufficient to lure the Portuguese international to Anfield.
Director of Football Damien Comolli has earmarked a move for the promising 22 year old and hopes to be able to fend off interest shown in the youngster by the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United with the promise of regular first team football, something the other two front runners for his signature may not so readily be able to offer.
Having sold Fernando Torres to Chelsea and brought in the new strike pairing of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll from Ajax and Newcastle United respectively, Messrs Dalglish and Comolli have been told that there will still be significant funds to bring in further additions in the summer, especially if Liverpool can secure a Premier League finish that secures European Football of some description for next season.
Coentrao is considered by many to be one of the best left sided players at this present time and he looks set to leave a struggling Benfica side who are some way off the team that won the domestic title last term. The Lisbon club are currently eleven points of top spot and failed to negotiate a spot in the Champions League knock out stage.
The Portuguese side also have financial problems that led to the selling of centre back David Luiz to Chelsea and could lead to further sales to help resolve debt issues. A valuation of around £18-20m has been placed on Fabio Coentrao who can play either as a standard left back or as a more advanced wing back, both of which would be of great use to a Liverpool side that appears to have issues on that side of the park, having to use Glen Johnson, who has himself been moved from right back by the impressive Martin Kelly, as a makeshift replacement in recent matches.
