Manchester United boss, Sir Alex Ferguson has identified Irish goalkeeper Shay Given as the man he wants to replace Edwin Van Der Sar.
The surprise move has come after attempts to sign David De Gea and Maarten Stekelenburg, from Atletico Madrid and Ajax respectively, have stalled.
Doubts about their inexperience at the top end of the game and their lack of knowledge of the Barclay’s Premier League has also troubled the Scot.
Ferguson has instead turned his attention to the out-of-favour, £7 million-rated Manchester City keeper, who has lost his place to Joe Hart.
Given, 34, has not played a single Premier League game this season and is certain to hand in a transfer request at the end of the season.
Manchester City manager, Roberto Mancini, does not want to lose Given but knows he cannot keep a player who is unhappy. The Italian is reluctant to sell to a title rival and would prefer to move him abroad.
Ferguson faces competition from Arsenal for the capture of Given’s signature. Arsene Wenger has long been an admirer of the Irishman and tried, in vain, to lure him to the Emirates last Summer.
