The Premier League Relegation Battle: West Ham, Wolves and Wigan Head for Drop?

Chairmen across the country, from Upton Park to the Hawthorns, will know it is squeaky bum time as the Barclay’s Premier League is approaching the final bend of the season.

Here at COS we have decided to gaze into our crystal ball to determine – very unscientifically – who will be playing Championship football and who will survive.

Birmingham City, predicted position: 16th, points: 38

Alex McLeish’s side has struggled this season for goals. Cameron Jerome, despite working hard, has not produced but McLeish has brought in Obafemi Martins and David Bentley on loan. These two, plus a solid defence, should be enough to guarantee Premier League football next season.

West Bromwich Albion, predicted position: 17th, points: 37

Roberto Di Matteo’s team will survive – just. We predict their goal difference will be superior to Wolves guaranteeing the yo-yo club reputation will be put to bed for another season at least. Perhaps new on-loan signing Carlos Vela will provide the ammunition?

Wolverhampton Wanderers, predicted position: 18th, points: 37

Wolves have struggled for goals all season and this may prove to be Mick McCarthy’s downfall. Here at COS, we believe they will only lose four more games, but they will not convert enough draws into three points. A return to Championship football beckons.

Wigan Athletic, predicted position: 19th, points: 36

The dream is over for Wigan and boss, Roberto Martinez. His vision to bring attractive football to the DW Stadium may cost the club its place among the football elite. A tough end-of-season schedule sees them pick up only 13 points, but it is so tight at the bottom a few good results could change everything.

West Ham United, predicted position: 20th, points: 36

Poor old West Ham. They have been flirting with relegation all season and their worst fears are soon to be realised. They have brought in players in the transfer window but it will not be enough. Picking up wins at Upton Park is crucial, whilst anything they can get on their travels will be a bonus.
