Amid reports of a summer clear-out at Chelsea, one player the Stamford Bridge outfit are apparently planning to bring in is Bayern München winger Franck Ribery .
After spending some £75 million on Fernando Torres and David Luiz in January, Blues owner Roman Abramovich is said to be keen to cash in on Didier Drogba, Florent Malouda, John Obi Mikel, Jose Bosingwa and Yuri Zhirkov.
And the left-sided Ribery would appear to be a direct replacement for his French compatriot Malouda.
The 27-year-old is contracted to Bayern until 2015 and could set Chelsea back as much as €30m.
And according to German sources, Chelsea will have to battle Real Madrid for his siganture, with the Bernabeu outfit mulling a swap deal involving Brazilian playmaker Kaka.
It seems that the world has forgotten about Franck Ribery somewhat. The Bayern Munich man had an average World Cup and an injury hit season in the Bundesliga has not helped the Bavarian sides hopes of retaining the title, that seemingly is lost to Borussia Dortmund, and now there is much speculation that the 27 year old is ready to leave Germany in the summer.
The former Marseille man is now in his fourth season at the Allianz Arena and has captured two domestic doubles during that time and was part of the side that made it to the Champions League final last May but now Chelsea are looking to snap up the French international.
Real Madrid’s interest is a little surprising because one would wonder how Ribery would fit into Jose Mourinho’s already crowded midfield that Brazilian superstar Kaka is himself struggling to get a foot into.
Louis Van Gaal is said to be looking to trust more to youth and may look to offload some of his Bayern Munich squad but surely he would be unlikely to sell a player as important to the club as the talented French playmaker?
