Olympique Marseille will attempt to lure Chelsea striker Didier Drogba back to France this summer. The Ligue 1 side are willing to offer the 32 year old striker a lucrative deal to persuade the prolific marksman to leave West London and they hope that the arrival of Fernando Torres to Stamford Bridge will improve the chances of a surprise move.
The Ivory Coast striker finished last term as the Premier League top scorer with 29 goals from 31 starts but has found life tougher this term and some sources believe that Carlo Ancelotti may well be plotting another striker signing to place alongside Torres and ageing duo Drogba and Nicolas Anelka reportedly head for the Blues Exit.
Drogba has spoken repeatedly about returning to Marseille to end his career and Didier Deschamps will hope to make that move a reality this summer as he looks to continue the club’s revival. The former French international midfielder led the Stade Velodome side to their first domestic title in almost two decades last term and the club are within sight of leaders Lille in what is shaking up to be a wide open title race this term.
Deschamps also negotiated a path through the Champions League group stage and will go up against Manchester United in the knock out phase and therefore a return to Marseille for Drogba would come at a time of relative success at the French club.
Jose Mourinho signed Didier Drogba from Marseille in July 2004 for a fee of £24m and the Abidjan born striker has been a huge success at the club helping them to three Premier League titles and a host of other successes that have led to the powerfully built front man becoming something of a cult hero at the club but perhaps now would be the right time to draw a line under his time in the Premier League.
Marseille are said to be putting together a deal that would see Drogba end his career at the club that helped make him one of the best players of his generation. Such an offer may be hard for the player to resist.
