Chris Hughton will be offered the chance to return to football management by West Bromwich Albion next season.
The Baggies put Roberto Di Matteo on gardening leave after the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday. This was West Brom’s 13th defeat in 18 games and leaving the team outside the relegation zone on goal difference.
Hughton, the former Newcastle boss, has been out of work since being sacked by the Magpies last December.
But he will not be offered the job until next season as Baggies’ chairman Jeremy Peace will wait to see if the team get relegated before naming a permanent manager.
Until then, first-team coach Mike Appleton, who has taken over on a caretaker basis, will remain in charge.
Hughton emerged as the favourite candidate after Sam Allardyce was approached to take the job. But negotiations stopped after Allardyce wanted to bring in his own support team which Peace declined to pay for.
