“After (Sir) Bobby Robson left PSV in 1999, he went to England and invited me to come along. I can’t remember the name of the club, but I remember I preferred to stay in Rio.
“Rio is the place I feel fine. I think I would have have done just fine in England. Football is football and goal-scoring is needed everywhere.”
Brazilian legend Romario has revealed he rejected the opportunity to join up with Sir Bobby Robson at Newcastle United.
Robson, who became the Magpies manager in 1999, managed the striker at PSV and tried to bring the World Cup winner to the Premier League.
This could have seen the Samba star link up with the Toon hero Alan Shearer.
Romario had a glittering career playing for a number of top clubs including Barcelona, PSV and Fluminese. In 1994 he lifted the World Cup, the player of the tournament award and the Fifa World Player of the Year.
Despite not knowing who Newcastle United were, he was tempted to sign for the club due to his desire to work with Sir Bobby again, but ultimately the draw of returning to Brazil was too strong.
