Tottenham are being linked to Everton Full-Back Leighton Baines amid rumours that current left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto is on the move to Italian side Juventus.
Since Gareth Bale’s conversion to left midfield, Assou-Ekoto has been the only senior natural left-back in the Tottenham squad. Should the Cameroonian international leave for Turin in the summer, Spurs are believed to be lining up Baines as his replacement.
Despite being part of a faltering Everton side, Baines, 26, has caught the eye of many this season, showing his steel after the heartbreak of playing his way out of England’s World Cup Squad in the summer. Baines’ attacking runs would compliment those of Bale easily and, with rumours about Everton’s financial situation being rife, the former Wigan left-back could be available for around £12million.
Harry Redknapp has long admired Baines for the attacking dimension he possesses, having bagged three times this term, as well as his set-piece capabilities. Having failed with a bid for fellow Everton full-back Phil Neville during January, Redknapp has switched his attention to the 26year old, hoping the Merseyside born player will spend his peak years at White Hart Lane.
Liverpool have also enquired about the full-backs availability, but with Everton desperate to avoid selling to their bitterest rivals, Tottenham may provide a viable option for Baines assuming the price is right. A bidding war may push Baines’ price up, but David Moyes may find he has little control over the price should Everton’s financial situation fail to improve by June.
