Giovanni Trapattoni believes it is crucial for Darron Gibson to play regular first-team football and has advised him to leave Manchester United.

Trapattoni is excited about the 23-year-old’s potential but fears his career will not fully lift off while he remains at Old Trafford.

While the Italian can understand why anyone would want to play for such a prestigious club, he feels it is more important for Gibson to get more experience.

“He can do more. He has a big potential. If I was Gibson I would go to another group where I always play,” Trapattoni said.

“By doing this you can build your mentality.

“Manchester is Manchester and it is an important club, but sometimes the young players need to play, play and play. It builds confidence.”

If only Sir Alex Ferguson’s face had been caught on camera when he heard Trapattoni say this.

Not many people have the courage to tell one of Ferguson’s players to leave the club, but the 71-year-old Italian is no shrinking violet.

And you can understand where Trapattoni is coming from. Gibson is a great prospect and would command a starting place in many Premier League sides.

But at Manchester United there is strong competition for places, especially in midfield. And for a youngster it is especially hard.

Trapattoni is also correct in saying he needs to play. Look at Jack Wilshere of Arsenal and how much he has improved in the last year since his move to Bolton.

Ferguson obviously rates the 23-year-old highly otherwise the Irishman would not still be a United player.

But Gibson did get a lot of the blame for the FA Cup third round defeat to Leeds last season, and his stock has never quite recovered.

What the midfielder decides to do next is important: does he gamble that he will get into the Manchester United first-team or does he take a step down in order to gain experience?
