Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey will miss the rest of the season after being ruled out for three months with a knee injury.
The 18-year-old is suffering from a tendon problem and will start a lengthy rehabilitation programme with the club’s medical staff at Melwood.
The England Under 19 international, who signed from Charlton Athletic last summer, missed the clash with Germany this week due to the problem.
The news deals a blow to the feel-good factor around the club since Kenny Dalglish replaced Roy Hodgson as Liverpool manager.
The club have won four games in a row and sit sixth in the Barclays Premier League, with one eye looking to the final Champions League spot.
But Shelvey, who has been described as the natural successor to captain Steven Gerrard, will now watch the final few months of the season from the sidelines.
He told the club’s official website: “I’m a bit down at the moment but I’m just hoping I can come back stronger.
“I am now going to take a 12-week rehabilitation and hopefully I’ll be back soon.”
