Manchester United are planning a move to sign in form Newcastle United full back Jose Enrique this summer as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to add more strength in depth to his Old Trafford squad. The table topping Premier League side are hoping to tie down current first choice left back Patrice Evra to a long term contract but wish to bid for the talented Spaniard either way.
Ferguson is said to have taken a keen interest in the 25 year old Valencia born defender and has been monitoring his form with a view to making an offer to the former Villarreal man. The Man United boss will look to lure the wide man with the opportunity of a high profile move that may help his chances of winning a place in the senior Spanish international set up.
£12m rated Enrique is now in his fourth season at St James’ Park and has become something of a fan favourite at the club but he may feel that a step up to Man United may well help him win his first Spanish cap and the opportunity to compete for major honours as well as playing in the Champions League may be too tempting to turn down.
Alan Pardew will fight off any advances for Enrique and after the sale of Andy Carroll to Liverpool last month the Magpies boss will hope that there will be no pressure from Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley to sell however he will surely feel anxious about any potential bid for the Spaniard.
Manchester United are also said to be interested in Cheik Tiote as they look to bring in a defensive midfielder in the summer to help replace the perennially injured Owen Hargreaves.
There is much speculation that Ferguson will conduct something of a clear out at Man United with many of the club’s squad players reportedly set for exits with the likes of Wes Brown, Michael Owen, Darron Gibson and Michael Carrick apparently linked with moves away and with Gary Neville already bowing out and Edwin Van der Sar set to follow suit with the likes of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes also nearing the end of their glittering careers. This exodus will open the door for new additions such as Jose Enrique.
