Harry Redknapp’s first priority in the summer will be to reinforce his defence with a £15 million bid for Per Mertesacker. The tall German, standing at 6 ft 6, is seen as the ideal choice to partner Michael Dawson in the heart of the Spurs defence.

With Jonathan Woodgate constantly out, possibly heading for a summer exit, and Ledley King never consistently fit, Harry knows more options are needed.

Redknapp has had the player watched on numerous occasions and has seen him first hand when the two sides met in the Champions league this season. The Werder Bremen star is a regular in the national side with over 60 caps to his name. Known for his aggressive but fair style of play, he is seen as someone who could comfortably adapt to the English game.

Per Mertesacker may be just what Harry Redknapp is after in order to beef up his back line. The Tottenham boss has had some epic problems with centre backs over the past 18 months and the White Hart Lane boss will hope that the German international will be interested in a move to the Premier League side this summer.

Tottenham have a wealth of defensive options but it just appears that at any given time a number of the options available to Redknapp are perennially out injured. There are constant concerns with both Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate and the likes of Michael Dawson and William Gallas have also struggled with knocks but the North London club do also have the services of Sebastien Bassong and Younes Kaboul as well as new signing Bongani Khumalo.

That said, it appears that Tottenham want to bring in the vastly experienced Mertesacker and a move from Werder Bremen in the summer looks fairly plausible as the Bundesliga side are struggling this term, just one point from the relegation zone and the 26 year old seems open to a summer move from the club he joined back in 2006.
