Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has written off his team’s chances of retaining their Premier League trophy and insists they must ensure they finish in the top four.

Chelsea face Fulham on Monday night knowing three points are essential to give the club a lift following last week’s home defeat to Liverpool.

The Blues are currently fourth, 10 points behind leaders Manchester United, but level on points with fifth-placed Tottenham.

With the top four teams gaining Champions League qualification, Ancelotti has admitted his sights are now firmly on their battle with their North London rivals and not with Manchester United.

“Now for us it is difficult to think that we can come back and fight for the Premier League title,” said Ancelotti. “The gap is very big, we have to be honest.

“The most important thing is to reach fourth place in the table to maintain Chelsea in the Champions League and we have to fight with the other teams.

“It is better for us to take it game by game in the Premier League but we have to reach fourth place as a minimum.”
