Speculation in the English press has consistently linked Arsenal with a long list of defenders, as manager Arsene Wenger looks to strengthen his options in this long-standing problem position.

One name that has continuously been mentioned is Montpellier centre half Emir Spahic, and the Bosnian national captain has reportedly made a verbal agreement with Wenger which will see him move to the Emirates stadium at the end of the current season reports

Spahic was the subject of a January bid from Aston Villa, with Gerard Houllier a known admirer of the 30-year-old stopper, having tracked him while he was back working in France for the French Football Federation.

A deal to bring the player to Villa Park was close but fell through at the last minute after failure to agree personal terms as well as negotiating a more reasonable fee than the £25m price tag that Montpellier chiefs initially slapped on the central defender.

Emir Spahic has long been linked with a move to the Emirates but is the Bosnian international getting ahead of himself by stating that a verbal agreement is in place that will see the Montpellier man move to the North London club in the summer?

First off the two clubs will have to haggle out a deal that suits both parties and that would appear to mean that the Ligue 1 club would have to probably half their somewhat ambitious valuation of Spahic. Remember we are talking about a 30 year old who has spent the majority of his career in Eastern Europe and does not have a rich history of success, even at a lower level.

However Arsene Wenger does appear to rate the Dubrovnik born centre back and the Gunners boss does seem to want to sign a new centre back and you can see why. Thomas Vermaelen is a long term injury doubt, Sebastian Squillaci also has his injury concerns and hasn’t been the most consistent performer when called upon. Laurent Koscielny has been in excellent in some games but off the pace and positionally naive in others and Johann Djourou does on occasion make big mistakes.

Arsenal have been linked with a number of potential defensive additions with the likes of Gary Cahill and Per Mertesacker being the most often mentioned and perhaps the most likely of those named, to make the move.
