ITALIAN World Cup winner Daniele de Rossi is Sir Alex Ferguson’s No.1 choice to replace Paul Scholes at Old Trafford.
Starsport understands Fergie wants De Rossi, 27, to plug the gap in Manchester United’s midfield. Fergie admits it will be almost impossible to replace Scholes when the midfield veteran retires. Scholes, 36, is mulling over signing a contract extension and playing one more season for Fergie’s men.
He has told club officials he will make a decision before the summer but he could choose to pack it in and bring the curtain down on his illustrious career.
Whatever he decides to do, Fergie knows he must find someone who can take his place in the United engine room.
Fergie has long admired Roma star De Rossi, who has won 63 caps and figured in two World Cups for Italy.
He sent two of his senior scouts to watch De Rossi in Roma’s Serie A clash with Napoli last weekend.
He reckons the Italian is a younger version of Scholes and would bring experience and goals.
But Fergie would have to splash out around £14m to bring De Rossi to Old Trafford in the summer.
One stumbling block could be that Roma are in takeover talks with US businessman Thomas Di Benedetto, a partner of the parent company of Boston Red Sox and Liverpool.?
If a takeover goes through the new owners would only agree to sell De Rossi in a player exchange deal that could see Federico Macheda and Anderson travelling in the opposite direction.
Fergie would be reluctant to sell Anderson and might be forced to up his bid if he wants to secure a deal for De Rossi.

Daniele De Rossi is a glorious midfield talent – but his style of play is far from that of Paul Scholes.
They share some attributes – a great strike from distance and good passing ability to the flanks to name but two.
However, De Rossi plays more of a Roy Keane – or dare I say it, Steven Gerrard – role for AS Roma, tackling from deep and driving the team forward.
He also scores his fair share of headers, and is a great leader on the pitch.
He is capable in defensive midfield, but can play in any central area, including just behind a striker.
At 27 years of age, De Rossi could quite conceivably play for five more years at the highest level.
With Owen Hargreaves likely to leave Old Trafford this summer, Daniele de Rossi would be a valuable asset for Manchester United.
£14m would be a far better deal than the £30m mooted earlier in the season, but Sir Alex Ferguson will be loathe to lose either Federico Macheda or Anderson.
