For 25 years Sir Alex has run the rule at Old Trafford.

He has chopped and changed his squad so much it would be easy to forgive him if he has forgotten some of those players.

But here at COS we want to know who his all-time best eleven would be – and we want you to help!

Vote for players in each position over the next few days and we will reveal the best eleven in the Fergie era on Friday.

Today we will start with goalkeepers and defenders, so stay tuned and the only way to make sure your choice is selected is to vote.

Goalkeepers

Les Sealey –

The Londoner famously replaced Jim Leighton in the 1990 FA Cup replay and made several key saves to win the game. It was rumoured Sir Alex would lose his job if he had lost the match so he owes Sealey a big thanks. Sealey was also in goal when United won the Cup Winners’ Cup the following year and developed a cult following among fans.

Peter Schmeichel –

A Danish legend who requires little introduction. Signed by Fergie in 1991 for £530,000 (Fergie descibed it as the bargain of the century) and won five FA Premier League titles, three FA Cups, one League Cup, and the UEFA Champions League. He was the rock from which Fergie built his dynasty.

Fabien Barthez –

Fans loved his eccentric behaviour, his taunting dribbles and step-overs past opposing strikers, and most importantly, his remarkable reaction saves. He helped United to the 2000-01 Premier League title. The French World Cup winner may have been a bit hit and miss, but when he was good he was unbeatable.

Edwin Van Der Sar –

Ferguson said one of his big regrets was not buying the Dutchman when Peter Schmeichel left. Even at 40-years-old he is the best goalkeeper in the league. In 2008 he saved three penalties to win the Champions League and the following season set a new records for consecutive clean sheets (11). Will be sorely missed when he retires.
