Liverpool are being linked with a shock summer move for Reading striker Shane Long.
The Irish international forward has been in fine form for the Championship outfit this season, and Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is thought to have targeted the player as a potential summer addition.
Long, who scored the winner against Liverpool in Reading’s 2-1 FA Cup victory at Anfield last season, has 14 goals to his name this term and is the leading score at the Madejski Stadium for Brian McDermott’s outfit.
Joe.ie reports that the player is desperate to ply his trade in the Barclays Premier League, although with Reading only six points outside the play-off places that dream could be realised in Berkshire.
Liverpool spent big on strikers in January, with Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez brought into Merseyside to nulify the exit of Spaniard Fernando Torres.

This seems like a somewhat unlikely move for Liverpool to make this summer. Having spent a fortune bringing in Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll as Fernando Torres left Anfield it may well be true that the Merseyside club could need another option up front to help with add more strength in depth in the attacking third, but is Reading striker Shane Long really the man for the job?
Whilst there is no doubt that the Irish international has talent is he really good enough to make it at a club looking to break back into the Premier League top four? I could understand such a move if we were talking about a player of 19 or 20 but Long is 24 and is not exactly a prolific marksman. The Royals front man has netted 38 goals in 164 appearances and most of them at Championship level.
Liverpool currently have the likes of David N’Gog, Dirk Kuyt and Milan Jovanovic as potential back ups and have some talented youngsters coming through like Suso and Daniel Pacheco so a move for Long really doesn’t make a great deal of sense to me at all.
