Owen Hargreaves is set to leave Manchester United on a free transfer in the summer after the club decided not to offer him a new contract, Goal.com UK has learned.
The midfielder’s contract expires at the end of the season and United had been considering a one-year extension on a pay-as-you-play basis.
But the decision has been made not to renew Hargreaves’ contract and he will leave the club for nothing in June after injury denied him an opportunity to return to fitness and fight for a new deal.
The 30-year-old has been dogged by injury problems since his £18 million move from Bayern Munich in May 2007. He was left out of Sir Alex Ferguson’s 25-man Champions League squad last month and the feeling within Old Trafford is that it is time for all parties to move on.
Ferguson is anticipating a major overhaul of his squad in the summer and is monitoring Luka Modric, Jack Rodwell and Ashley Young as he looks to freshen up his midfield.
Owen Hargreaves has battled vainly to restart a career blighted by injury and it’s no surprise that Sir Alex Ferguson is not renewing the England international’s contract and that is a shame for the 30 year old who will now have to persuade another club that he has something to offer other than a hike in treatment costs.
With the former Bayern Munich man heading for the exit the Man United boss is keen to continue to freshen things up at the club and has set his sights on three quality midfielders who could all prove very tricky to wrestle from their respective clubs.
Jack Rodwell has been a Ferguson target for a couple of years and the central midfield starlet is tied down to a long term Everton contract and David Moyes will fight tooth and nail to keep the youngster at Goodison Park, not least because if he sells him he has no way of knowing how much of the funds will be given to him to re-invest, such are the financial constraints he is under as Toffees boss.
Luka Modric is enjoying his time at White Hart Lane and whilst a move to the Premier League table toppers may appeal to the Croatian international, the flair player will probably chose to stay at the North London club that have helped make him who he is today, also he has a great relationship with Harry Redknapp and it is unlikely the Tottenham boss would consider a sale. However if Spurs fail to secure another top four finish, then things may change somewhat.
Probably the most likely of the trio to make the move to Man United is Ashley Young. The 25 year old winger has also been a long term target of Ferguson’s who apparently wanted to nab the wide man when he left Watford for Villa Park. Gerard Houllier has failed to get Young to put pen to paper on a new deal and come the summer he will have just one year left on his current deal which will make the midlands side very nervy indeed.
As well as Owen Hargreaves a number of other players are apparently on the cusp of an Old Trafford move. Michael Owen will probably not get a new deal in the summer and Jonny Evans, Michael Carrick, Danny Welbeck, Darron Gibson, Gabriel Obertan and Bebe are all close to the axe according to some reports.
