Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has started the recruitment process for several summer transfer targets.
Following Andy Carroll’s £35million move to Liverpool, Pardew knows how crucial the transfer window will be.
Fans remain sceptical over the manager’s claims he will receive all the money from the Carroll deal.
But Pardew’s budget will depend on his current squad finishing the job and avoiding relegation during the final 10 Premier League games.
The futures of Jose Enrique and Joey Barton have been put on hold until the summer but a list of possible alternatives have been drawn up.
Lille striker Gervinho and PSV Eindhoven winger Jeremain Lens have been linked with the Magpies, but Pardew insists any deals are a long way off.
“We have sat down and discussed briefly what the plans are,” he said to PA. “It’s very important to have a strategic plan of what you are doing.
“We don’t want to be doing everything at the last minute – but you have to be patient because sometimes there are six or seven teams involved around one player, and then they fall away.
“It might happen right at the last minute, but there has been three or four months’ work gone into that particular player.
“We might not be signing players as soon as the window opens, but believe you me, we are very much on the case of players we feel might take us forward.”
