Liverpool will offer young Argentine full back Emiliano Insua to Benfica in the hope of securing highly rated Portuguese international Fabio Coentrao.
The Anfield side are looking to bring in a left back and are one of many clubs chasing the attack minded 22 year old and the player himself has courted interest from Merseyside by stating that he would love to join the Premier League side. £19m rated Coentrao helped his Lisbon side to the domestic title in his first season in the first team last term and then went on to be one of the few bright spots of an otherwise disappointing Portugal side at the 2010 World Cup.
Liverpool have in recent weeks taken to using right back Glen Johnson in an unaccustomed role on the right but injury to Martin Kelly, who has been in great form, has shown that Kenny Dalglish needs to invest in a new left sided option.
Insua is currently on loan at Galatasaray and was last summer all set to complete a move to Fiorentina before talks stalled and the 22 year old Argentine international may well be tempted by a move to Benfica and he would offer boss Rui Costa a ready made replacement for Coentrao and one who has a great deal of potential.
Liverpool’s other left sided options include Paul Konchesky, who is also likely to leave in the summer and could turn his loan move to Nottingham Forest into a permanent one, especially if the former West Ham and Fulham man helps Billy Davies’s side get promoted to the Premier League. Fabio Aurelio is also at the club but is very much considered a back up option.
