A Pakistan victory will almost guarantee a place in the quarter-finals for the controversial country

But a defeat for New Zealand and the kiwis could be heading for an early exit. All still to play for.

Venue: Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Kandy

Toss has always been crucial in Sri Lanka and the team batting first will have a clear advantage.

Team News

Pakistan: Mohammad Hafeez, Ahmed Shehzad, Kamran Akmal, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq, Umar Akmal, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz, Saeed Ajmal

Pakistan are in good form despite the batting hiccup against Canada in their last game and are likely to play the same side that beat the minnows.

New Zealand: Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, Scott Styris, James Franklin, Jamie How/Jacob Oram, Nathan McCullum, Daniel Vettori, Tim Southee, Hamish Bennett

New Zealand are likely to retain the side that beat Zimbabwe by 10 wickets with the only possible change being Jacob Oram coming in for Jamie How.

Prediction

Pakistan will be aware that a few more win will ensure they finish among the top two in their ground and ensure playing a less-stronger side in the quarter-finals.

They have also had the better of New Zealand in recent times and have the psychological edge. Their spinners are doing the job and the middle order has got runs while the all-rounders have chipped in when needed.

But they will be wary of the lack of runs from the openers and this could work to New Zealand’s advantage.

The Kiwis will be banking on Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum to continue their good run and will also be looking to registering a win against a stronger team having beaten Kenya and Zimbabwe and losing tamely to Australia.

New Zealand will come out fighting and will just pip Pakistan.

Key Men

Shahid Afridi – His batting form has taken a dip but the bowling is doing the trick

Brendon McCullum – Can dominate any kind of bowling
