Liverpool will make an offer for Arsenal full back Gael Clichy this summer as the French international continues to stall on a new contract. The 25 year old’s current deal comes to an end in the summer of 2012 and the North London club may well elect to sell the defender rather than risk losing him if he chooses to run down the clock and leave the Emirates for nothing.
Given that Arsene Wenger has a ready made replacement for Clichy in the form of Kieran Gibbs and may therefore not give in to any demands the former Cannes man makes. Having spent eight years at Arsenal, the last five of which yielded no silverware, the Toulouse born left back may feel now is the time to consider a new challenge.
Thus far there has been reported interest from many European sides but it seems that as well as Liverpool the only side of note who are ready to make an offer are Juventus and a move to the Turin club may not tempt Clichy as they are in something of a continual turmoil having failed to secure Champions League football for this season they brought in Luigi Delneri as a new boss only to see the club fall further still and are in danger of failing to qualify for any European football next term.
Juventus are thought to be ready to offer up to €20m (£17m) for Gael Clichy and that is a fee that Liverpool appear more than willing to match for a player with a great deal of top level experience and a great deal of talent.
Liverpool have a number of options at left back but none of which appear to appeal to Kenny Dalglish and director of football Damien Comolli, who knows Clichy well from his work with the French Football Federation over the years. Emiliano Insua and Paul Konchesky are out on loan and are likely to be sold, Glen Johnson has been drafted in to play on the left but is now back on the right after injury to Martin Kelly. Fabio Aurelio, also injured, is thought of only as a back-up.
