Manchester United will this summer attempt to persuade Italian international Gianluigi Buffon to leave struggling Juventus this summer. The world class shot stopper has stated his desire to remain at the Turin club but Sir Alex Ferguson will try to lure the 33 year old to Old Trafford as he looks to find a suitable replacement for Edwin van der Sar who will retire from the game at the end of the season.
Some sources state that Juventus may listen to offers of €20m (£17.1m) and above and whilst the fee may seem steep it is worth noting that Ferguson knows better than most the crucial importance of having a safe pair of hands behind a back four.
It is no coincidence that the successful periods of Ferguson’s reign at Man United have come during the spells when Peter Schmeichel and van der Sar were between the sticks and therefore they may well be willing to meet any asking price set for a player of Buffon’s calibre.
Juventus has struggled for the second season running and new boss Luigi Delneri may well get his marching orders having seen his Serie A side lurch from one poor run of form to the next. The Bianconeri currently lie seventh in the table, five points from a Europa League qualification place and ten points back from Lazio in the last Champions League spot and continued failure may lead to the realisation that Buffon may need to leave the club.
Ferguson brought in Anders Lindegaard earlier in the season but the Danish international is thought of as a back up for whomever the Man United boss lands this summer and it seems likely that Tomasz Kuszczak could leave in pursuit of first team football after four years waiting for his chance to shine.
The Premier League table toppers have also been linked with moves for the likes of Manuel Neuer, Hugo Lloris and Pepe Reina as potential replacements for Edwin van der Sar.
