Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed he is making enquiries about signing a goalkeeper on an emergency loan to ease his injury crisis.
Current No.1 Wojciech Szczesny dislocated a finger in Arsenal’s loss to Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday and joins Lukasz Fabianski on the treatment table, who is out for the season after having shoulder surgery.
Fellow keeper Vito Mannone is also injured leaving Manuel Almunia, 33, as Wenger’s only option in goal.
Despite putting in a strong performance for the Gunners after replacing Szczesny in the Nou Camp on Tuesday, the Spaniard has failed to convince in the No 1 jersey.
When asked whether Wenger was considering making an emergency loan signing, he said: “Yes, but we have not asked the Premier League yet. I have someone in mind but I can’t tell you who. It’s not viable for the weekend.”
Arsenal travel to Manchester United on Saturday in the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup.
In all seriousness, who is Wenger eyeing up? Will the Premier League allow the North London club to bring in a back up keeper? It would appear that there is definitely a case for Arsenal to be allowed to be cleared to make such a short term signing and one wonders just why the Gunners appear to suffer more than their fair share of injuries.
Luckily the one senior keeper who is fit and able to play is Manuel Almunia, who put in a superb display at the Nou Camp and managed to keep his side in the game for as long as possible before the sending off of Robin Van Persie then effectively ended all hope of progress to the Champions League Quarter-Finals.
Some will say that Arsene Wenger did not act to add strength in depth in January and that argument may be as applicable to the defensive area as well as between the sticks. One thing is for sure, Arsenal supporters will demand that serious money is spent in the summer if the club manages to finish the season without any major silverware.
For the record, Mr Tickle is unable to sign on the dotted line due to he is busy with some high level tickling.
