The Serie A title race took another twist last night as league leaders AC Milan lost 1-0 to Palermo in Sicily. This is now their third competitive match without a win and should Inter Milan defeat Lecce this afternoon there will only be two points separating both Milan teams.
AC Milan are desperate for a goal scorer having only scored twice in their last 4 games, with one of them coming from an unlikely source in Gennaro Gattuso. Ibrahimovic and Pato were both in great form early on in the season but the goals have dried up recently, with Ibrahimovic currently serving a 3 game ban and Pato struggling for full fitness. Both played in the Champions League match against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane but never really looked like scoring. Spurs were defending so deep but neither striker was able to create the space needed to score. Oh how they miss Super Pipo! That would have been the perfect game for Inzaghi to pop up in the box and poach a goal. He will probaby miss the rest of the season due to a cruciate ligament injury.
The international break has come at a great for AC Milan and their manager Massimiliano Allegri will be hoping that Pato can shrug off his niggling injuries, but will also want to have Andrea Pirlo available again to give the team the creativity they have been lacking. After their defeat to Palermo last night, Clarence Seedorf admitted his team’s frustration “There’s a lot of frustration, because we didn’t finish off our actions, also due to some back luck in front of goal. We need to be focused and determined in order to score some goals. It takes a bit of luck and a carefree mind to put it in the back of the net. Hopefully, Inter will slip up tomorrow, but even if they don’t, we’ll be up by two points”.
They will need more than a two point gap for their next game as it’s a little known match that goes by the name of ‘Derby della Madonnina’, otherwise known as the Milan derby. You’ve been warned.
