Arsenal will reportedly speed up their hunt to recruit Bolton Wanderers defender Gary Cahill to replace Thomas Vermaelen, ruled out of action at least until the start of the next Premier League
According to News of the World, the 25-year-old Belgian has visited specialists in Holland for the past week in a bid to try and nurse the Achilles problem which first arose in September.
The likes of Laurent Koscielny, Sebastien Squillaci and Johan Djourou have had mixed fortunes this season and Wenger is determined to reinforce his back-four for the next Premier League campaign.
The Gunners boss reportedly found the £15million price tag for Cahill too high but is having second thoughts as suitors such as Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have emerged.
As it stands £15m may not be enough to land Bolton centre back Gary Cahill as the Trotters were reportedly holding out for £25m and given that the player has in fact improved this season and Arsenal’s need is greater it seems that Arsene Wenger may have to think long and hard about just how badly he needs a new solid defender to beef up a back line that has looked very unstable this term.
Wenger has watched on as his defence repeatedly hits the self destruct button with the likes of Laurent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci looking at times not worthy of selection. The continued injury lay off suffered by Thomas Vermaelen has left the Gunners boss in a pickle but luckily Johan Djourou has held things together at times.
The Arsenal boss has been linked with a number of defensive targets but is said to be impressed by the 25 year old England international who has been a big part of Owen Coyle’s successful season this term. Manchester United have also been linked with a move for the former Aston Villa man as Sir Alex Ferguson has similar problems with injury and poor form haunting the centre of his defence.
