Having arrived only arrived at Benfica last summer it may take some persuading secure the signing of impressive young Argentine international Nicolas Gaitan. Some sources believe that Liverpool may offer Maxi as part of a player plus cash offer to seal the deal.
Gaitan has had a good first season at the Estádio da Luz, scoring goals a plenty and contributing a number of assists both in domestic competition and even more so in Europa League action. The 23 year old can play in a number of roles but works best out wide on the left which has been something of a problem area of a few seasons now.
Ryan Babel attempted to fill that role and Yossi Benayoun was at times effective in that position before he left for Chelsea. The likes of Maxi, Joe Cole and Milan Jovanovic have also been used in wide areas with moderate success but Kenny Dalglish is looking for a new addition who can help provide ammunition for his new front men Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll.
Benfica are thought to be looking for up to €20m (£17.5m) for the former Boca Juniors man and the Anfield side may well be willing to pay the fee but may also look to offer players in a part exchange deal to help cut costs.
