Liverpool Set to Sign Former Player: Dalglish Offers Veteran Two Year Contract

Villa Park keeper set for Anfield return.

Brad Friedel is set to quit Aston Villa and make an emotional return to Liverpool.

Anfield boss Kenny Dalglish is confident he has won the race to sign the former USA international on a free transfer.

Liverpool have offered golden oldie Friedel, 40, a two-year deal and he is ready to return to his first Premier League club.

Friedel spent three years at Anfield after arriving from Columbus Crew in 1997 and will go back as Pepe Reina’s No. 2.

Whilst clearly at 40 years of age Brad Friedel is no spring chicken he would clearly be a very useful back up to Pepe Reina and any concerns about just how fit and able the American veteran is, should be allayed by the fact that the Aston Villa man has not missed a Premier League match in seven seasons, an astonishing achievement regardless of age.

Brad Jones was brought in by Roy Hodgson from Middlesbrough but has not had a look in and Kenny Dalglish apparently feels that Freidel would be a much better second string keeper to have on the club’s books. The Ohio born goalie spent three years at the Merseyside club between 1997 and 2000 making 25 appearances during the Roy Evans and then Gerard Houllier regimes.

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has earmarked a number of new additions as he looks to spend this summer and help push his side back into the top four race. A number of players are said to be set for an Anfield exit with the likes of Milan Jovanovic, Paul Konchesky, Christian Poulsen and Joe Cole all strongly linked with moves away from the club.

Dalglish is said to be keen on bringing in more creative attacking options to help provide ammunition for strikers Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll. There has been growing speculation that the club will make offers for Ashley Young and Charlie Adam.

The need for a strong back up keeper has probably reduced somewhat with the club missing out on European football for next season.
