Anfield boss wants Stadium of Light pair to bolster his midfield.
Liverpool will launch a £23million bid to prize Sunderland’s two hottest stars, Jordan Henderson and Lee Cattermole, away from the North-East.
Manager Kenny Dalglish believes signing the duo will help bolster his midfield options that will benefit the club for years to come.
Speculation emerged yesterday of Dalglish making a bid for Henderson, 20, who has been a target for rivals Manchester United.
Today the Daily Telegraph reports the Scot will follow that bid with an offer for £10million-rated Cattermole.
The 23-year-old has impressed and shocked in equal measure since his debut for Middlesbrough in 2005.
The former England U21 has forged a reputation as a hard-working, combative defensive midfielder but he can at times go over the top with his robust tackling.
But any further Liverpool forays into the transfer market will depend on who Dalglish can get out of Anfield.
The financial drain caused by the expected loss from Alberto Aquilani’s transfer coupled with the high wages of Joe Cole, Milan Jovanovic, Christian Poulsen, Emiliano Insua and Paul Konchesky is causing strain on the Reds’ bank account.
Dalglish will have to trim the club’s £120million wage bill before making moves for the wingers he is desperately craving, with Aston Villa’s Ashley Young and Stewart Downing high on his wish list.
