White Hart Lane star could be on his way to the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland are attempting to sign Tottenham Hotspur striker Peter Crouch in a £10million deal this summer.
Black Cats boss Steve Bruce will move for the 30-year-old to replace Darren Bent, who left the Stadium of Light for Aston Villa last January for £24million.
The Sunderland manager will begin an overhaul of his squad following the expected £20million sale of Jordan Henderson to Liverpool and will kick start his transfer spree with buying Crouch.
Bruce will get the majority of the money from both those deals as he will try and bring in up to nine new faces to freshen up a squad whose form alarmingly dropped in the last few months of the season.
Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson is also on his wanted list but his team-mate Danny Welbeck is not up for sale according to Sir Alex Ferguson.
Crouch is seen as more viable alternative despite the England international rejecting the same move two years ago, opting to a move to Spurs instead.
