Old Trafford boss looks to continue spending.
Sir Alex Ferguson will look to follow up the imminent signing of Blackburn Rovers centre back Phil Jones by pursuing long term targets Ashley Young, David de Gea and Jack Rodwell. The Old Trafford boss has been promised significant funds to re-invest in his Man United squad and with that in mind the Scot is looking to seal deals to bring in this trio to help build for the future.
With a number of Man United’s squad bowing out over the past few months, Edwin van der Sar, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes, and a few other members of the squad nearing the end of their glittering careers, Ferguson knows he must look to bring in new signings to help in what he will hope can be a seamless transition from the old to the new.
The signings of Javier Hernandez, Chris Smalling, and apparently Phil Jones, show that Ferguson is looking to supplement the talent coming through the club’s youth ranks with up and coming talent from elsewhere.
Aston Villa winger Ashley Young seems destined to leave Villa Park and is a player that Ferguson greatly admires and a move for the England international appears on the cards. The wide man was strongly linked with a move to Man United when he left Watford for the Midlands and now he may finally be set to move to Old Trafford.
Spanish keeper David de Gea looked like he was on his way to Man United last month and Ferguson has commented directly on the issue and a move to bring in the Atletico Madrid man will probably be completed after the European Under 21 Championships. The 20 year old seems a certainty to replace Van der Sar this summer.
Finally Ferguson will look to finally land Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell. The talented youngster has been on the Man United radar for some time and even though the England Under 21 international is tied to a long term deal at Goodison Park there is a very good chance that a deal is in the offing.
The defensive midfielder has been a part of the Toffees first team plans for three seasons now and is still just 20 years of age. Having allowed Owen Hargreaves to leave on the completion of his Man United contract, Ferguson knows he needs to look for more steel to add to the centre of his midfield and Rodwell appears to be his number one target in that regard.
