Liverpool are making a shock move for Manchester United defender John O’Shea.

The Irish Independent says Liverpool are one of five clubs chasing the signature of O’Shea, who looks set to turn down Sunderland.

But there is plenty of interest elsewhere, with Tottenham, Newcastle and Aston Villa all interested in the €6m (£5.3m)- rated Ireland defender.

After 360 appearances for Manchester United, the Waterford man appears to be on his way out after Alex Ferguson green-lighted a move to the Stadium of Light.

But with a host of clubs enquiring after his availability, the 30-year-old could make a lucrative move this summer.

This would be quite some surprise. Whilst it may be true that Liverpool could do with strengthening their back line, quite why they would make a move for 30 year old Man United defender John O’Shea is beyond me. Anfield boss Kenny Dalglish and director of football Damien Comolli are busy chasing prospective targets to resolve problem areas but it is unclear exactly where the experienced Irish international would fit in.

O’Shea, who has amassed a mountain of appearances for his Old Trafford side since his debut in 1999, can play at right back, in the centre of the defence as well as on occasion being used as a defensive midfielder.

Now Liverpool’s right back slot is pretty much covered. Martin Kelly looked very sound an option and the youngster even forced England international Glen Johnson out of the first team picture for a time. The Merseyside club also has John Flanagan who looked good when called upon last term.

Dalglish may well be looking for a new centre back due to that fact that Jamie Carragher and Sotirios Kyrgiakos are getting on a bit, but O’Shea is not much younger than either of those two anyway. The club also has injury concerns over Danish international Daniel Agger.

In terms of defensive midfielders, Lucas had a great season last term and appears to have made that position his own, so again it is difficult to see why Liverpool would want, or need, John O’Shea. Factor in the obvious issues between the arch rivals and such a move seems totally mindless.

Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is however looking to trim his Old Trafford squad and a number of elder statesmen and under performing squad players looked like they will be culled this summer. Bebe has been sent out on loan to Besiktas. Darron Gibson and Wes Brown are strongly linked with moves to Sunderland. Owen Hargreaves did not get a new contract and there are big question marks about the futures of both Gabriel Obertan and back up keeper Tomasz Kuszczak, who’s place in the squad will become even more under threat when the Premier League champions, as expected, sign up Atletico Madrid keeper David de Gea.
