St James’ Park welcome another player from across the Channel.
Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Lens midfielder Mehdi Abeid on a five-year contract.
The 18-year-old has had an agreement with the Toon Army to join for some time but the move has now been finalised.
Mehdi will join up with the other French-born signings manager Alan Pardew has made this summer.
Frenchman Yohan Cabaye and Sylvain Marveaux and striker Demba Ba from West Ham United have already agreed five-year deals to move to St James’ Park.
“We are delighted to bring Mehdi to the club,” reserve team manager Peter Beardsley said.
“He is a bright, young talent and we think he has an exciting future ahead of him.
“After an impressive trial with us earlier in the year, I’m looking forward to working with Mehdi and developing his talent.”
Pardew is undergoing a summer of rebuilding as he is getting rid of the stars that brought Newcastle back into the Premier League and and retained top flight status.
Joey Barton, Jonas Gutierrez, Fabricio Collocini and Jose Enrique are all expected to leave over the next few months.
