Old Trafford coach wants San Siro star.
Manchester United assistant-boss Rene Meulensteen insists Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder would be an ‘ideal’ signing for the club.
Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson is looking for a replacement for the legendary Paul Scholes and has been linked with the Dutch international for the last 12 months.
The Scot is also keeping tabs on Tottenham’s Luka Modric and Arsenal’s Samir Nasri but Sneijder would be the signature he desperately craves.
Inter Milan have so far declared he is not for sale but sources in Italy claim a £40million could be enough to change their minds on a player who has four-years left on his contract.
The 27-year-old has won everything with the Serie A giants including the famous treble in 2010 and helped steer Holland into the World Cup final.
Meulensteen is certain if Sneijder did make the switch this summer he would be a big hit.
“The new Paul Scholes doesn’t exist, just as a new Roy Keane has never emerged, but Sneijder would fit perfectly here,” Meulensteen told Dutch magazine Voetbal International.
“I cannot actually think of a more ideal player for our team.
“I say this not because he’s a Dutchman. I’ve worked here for a while, I know the team inside out and I know he would be a great signing.
“He seems a perfect complement to the likes of (Javier) Hernandez, (Wayne) Rooney, Park (Ji-sung), (Ashley) Young, (Antonio) Valencia, Nani and (Ryan) Giggs.
“And, of course, Wesley has the necessary experience in top-level football.
“I don’t know what his future is at Inter, whether he may leave or whether he’s affordable.
“But, purely based on football skills, I say get Sneijder.”
