New Villa Park boss looks to spend big to help appease unhappy supporters.
Alex McLeish is set to splash the cash at Aston Villa next week to ease growing unrest among fans over Ashley Young and Stewart Downing’s sale.
Manchester City keeper Shay Given, 35, was at Villa yesterday for a medical after agreeing a three-year contract following a £3.5m bid.
The Republic of Ireland international is set to be unveiled on Tuesday when Villa showcase their new strip.
Villa have also tabled a £10m bid to Wigan for their influential left-sided winger Charles N’Zogbia.
Villa hope the Frenchman will be their next arrival after Given and plan to play him on the left.
McLeish also wants a new leader for his side, with a bid in the pipeline for Scott Parker after contacting West Ham.
Although McLeish is giving left-back Stephen Warnock a fresh chance after he was exiled under predecessor Gerard Houllier.
But McLeish does fancy a new right-back and wants Tottenham full-back Alan Hutton.
If McLeish can persuade Lerner to release the funds he would also like another winger to play opposite N’Zogbia, with Fiorentina’s Peru winger Juan Manuel Vargas a target.

Clearly Aston Villa as a club will have to deal with a very unhappy fanbase following first the appointment of Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish as the successor to Gerard Houllier and then the sales of three key players this summer.
Brad Friedel, a hugely important part of the club’s back line, left for Tottenham and wingers Stewart Downing and Ashley Young have left for Liverpool and Man United respectively, leaving many Villa Park supporters stunned.
Villa seem very close to bringing Shay Given in from Man City and that would be a masterstroke as the Irish veteran is a quality performer who really does not deserve to waste away on the Etihad Stadium bench any longer.
The Midlands club have also reportedly put in a bid to sign Scott Parker from West Ham and appear to be leading the chase for the England international as offers have not been forthcoming from Tottenham or Chelsea, even though both London side have been heavily linked with the midfielder.
Charles N’Zogbia looks like being a likely capture as well with Wigan owner Dave Whelan acknowledging that it will be hard for the Latics to keep the French winger if a significant offer comes in for the former Newcastle United star.
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp also seems fairly likely to allow Alan Hutton to leave as he looks to trim his White Hart Lane squad having been told by chairman Daniel Levy that he must sell before he can buy and if McLeish can tempt Fiorentina winger Vargas to move to the Premier League side, then that too would be a top notch addition. The Peruvian has been a big hit in Serie A especially since his move from Catania to Florence in 2008.
So all in all if Alex McLeish can nab three or four of these reported targets then perhaps the club’s fans will be more inclined to back their boss but they will also be looking to owner Randy Lerner to put his money where his mouth is if he is serious about pushing Aston Villa back up the table this coming season.
