Sir Alex Ferguson has stated his desire to bring in a long term replacement for Paul Scholes and to that end has been linked with moves for Luka Modric, Samir Nasri, Marek Hamsik and Wesley Sneijder but this source believes the Old Trafford boss is now keen on Brazilian youngster Ganso who is also being courted by the likes of Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

The 21 year old Santos star was key to the Brazilian sides Copa Libertadores triumph and alongside Neymar has become one of the most sought after youngsters in Planet Football. Ferguson has already spent over £50m to bring in Phil Jones, David de Gea and Ashley Young from Blackburn Rovers, Atletico Madrid and Aston Villa respectively and it appears the Scot has not finished his summer spending.

Ganso is a rangy, powerfully built attacking midfielder who links midfield and attack well and the youngster also has an eye for goal which is what the Man United boss is looking for. Currently Ferguson has a plethora of central midfield options but the likes of Darren Fletcher, Anderson, Darron Gibson and Michael Carrick do not provide a great deal of creativity or goal threat, hence his pursuit of a long term Scholes replacement.

In order to finance further moves in the transfer market Ferguson will look to offload another player or two having already sold Wes Brown and John O’Shea to Sunderland. Danny Welbeck may be sent out on another season long loan deal, Tomasz Kuszczak is interesting West Brom, Darron Gibson may be on his way to Stoke City, Jonny Evans has been linked with a move to Tottenham and Dimitar Berbatov interests PSG.
