Old Trafford club outbid Emirates rival.
Manchester United have emerged as the reason behind Arsenal pulling out of the deal to sign Deportivo Saprissa striker Joel Campbell.
The Gunners looked certain to complete a £950,000 agreement today for the 19-year-old but he mysteriously did not turn up for a meeting last night to sign the contract.
But it now appears United hijacked the deal at the eleventh hour by outbidding their rivals’ transfer fee and wage proposal.
The Costa Rican international claims he has postponed any deal to concentrate on the U20 World Cup, did not seem to matter when he was undergoing a medical with the Gunners yesterday.
His agent and father Humberto Campbell is believed to have told Everardo Herrera, a South American journalist, the English club who outbid Arsenal is Manchester United, and they are still interested.
The news will come as another blow for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who has seen another player slip through his grasp and end up at Old Trafford.
The Frenchman wanted to sign both Chris Smalling and Phil Jones but both defenders decided to join the English champions.
Wenger must now once again go back to the drawing board to plan his next transfer, with supporters becoming increasingly frustrated by his lack of activity.
