Anfield side linked with move to sign White Hart Lane defender.
Liverpool are considering a shock bid for unsettled Tottenham defender Sebastien Bassong.
The 25-year-old defender made just seven Premier League starts last term and has grown frustrated at his bit-part role at White Hart Lane.
The French-born Cameroon international is likely to leave this summer and has been tipped for a return to Ligue 1 with Paris Saint Germain or Marseille his most likely destinations.
But according to sources in France, Liverpool are also interested in the powerful centre-back and cold test the water with a £5m bid for the former Newcastle man.
Reds boss Kenny Dalglish has admitted that he will need to offload existing players before making any further additions to the squad having seen owners Fenway Sports Group spend £100m on new signings since taking over.
This is interesting and not totally beyond the bounds of possibility. Harry Redknapp is keen to get rid of a number of his ‘squad’ players having been told by chairman Daniel Levy that he must sell before he can buy and as the White Hart Lane boss has a pretty massive squad there are indeed many players he can afford to cash in on and Cameroon internatonal Sebastien Bassong is just one of many he would accept offers for.
Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is reportedly looking to strengthen a back line that doesn’t have a great deal of options. Jamie Carragher and Sotirios Kyrgiakos are both getting on a bit and Daniel Agger has his fair share of injury concerns which leaves Martin Skrtel and youngster Danny Wilson as the principal players available to the Anfield manager.
Bassong made just seven Premier League starts last season and may well jump at the chance of a move to Merseyside and director of football Damien Comolli will know alot about the former Metz and Newcastle United man from his dealings with French Under 21 side, who Bassong represented for two years before switching allegiance to Cameroon.
Comolli has close ties to the French football federation and may well have connections who would advise him on just such a move, he was also of course a former Tottenham employee and that may help in any move to bring a player from the North London club to Liverpool.
Redknapp may not be keen on selling to a fellow top four chasing club but may also feel that he needs to sell players sooner rather than later, in order to give himself time to spend any funds he accrues from sales.
The Tottenham boss is also reportedly looking to offload David Bentley, Niko Kranjcar, Alan Hutton, Wilson Palacios, Giovani dos Santos and Robbie Keane and already sold Jamie O’Hara to Wolves. It is perhaps a measure of just how many players Redknapp has in his armoury that he can afford to sell all of these talents without making much of an impact to his starting eleven plans.
Liverpool have already spent over £100m on new players in 2011, bringing in Luis Suarez, Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing and Doni. However it seems that Dalglish still want to bring in players to help deal with any defensive issues he feels the club has, not least in the left back area.
A move to buy Bassong to help in the centre of defence seems sensible, especially if the 25 year old can be purchased for as little as £5m.
