Speculation: Reports in North East that Joey Barton could leave Newcastle on free transfer today. (Sky Sports)
JOEY Barton faces club discipline after he questioned Newcastle United’s direction in a Twitter rant.
The midfielder let rip after yesterday’s disappointing 3-2 defeat at Leeds.
A clearly frustrated Barton declined to speak to the media as he left Elland Road.
But influential Barton later hinted at discontent within the dressing room in an astonishing series of tweets on the social networking site, which were seen by his 156,000 followers.
Barton said: “If only we as players could tell the fans exactly how it is, without them above fining us lots of money. There will be a time and a place.
“If it wouldn’t effect team morale and cause unrest within the dressing room, am certain Jose’s comments would be the tip of the iceberg….. And again it would be left to those magnificent fans to pick up the remnants of their once great football club.
“If I wanted to leave, I’d just come out and say “I want to leave.” Things need addressing as am not prepared to go through a relegation again.” (Shields Gazette)

There is growing speculation that Newcastle United will cut their losses and dump Joey Barton after the England hopeful once again expressed his concern at the way the St James’ Park club is being run. The former Man City man has used his Twitter account to raise seemingly legitimate concerns about how owner Mike Ashley runs the Magpies and it could lead to the 28 year old being released on a free transfer.
Barton has a year to run on his current contract and has been strongly linked with interest from Arsenal and the North London club may now feel the time is right to plot a move for the midfielder.
The Newcastle United ‘bad-boy’ had a solid season last term and managed to exorcise some of his temperamental demons in the process but the Huyton born midfielder has watched on as captain Kevin Nolan left to join Championship side West Ham and Alan Pardew has battled with a shoestring budget to improve his squad.
Though the club cashed in on Andy Carroll to the tune of £35m, thus far the only arrivals in the transfer window, Demba Ba, Yohan Cabaye and Sylvain Marveaux came at a collective cost of just £4.5m, leaving many to wonder about Ashley’s long term ambitions for the North-East club.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been linked with a move for Barton as he looks to strengthen his squad after constant speculation about the futures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, having already lost Gael Clichy to Man City.
