Anfield back up player heading for the San Siro.
Alberto Aquilani has declared he is close to leaving Liverpool.
AC Milan have now expressed an interest in Aquilani as they look to bolster their midfield options after being frustrated in their attempts to land Fiorentina’s Riccardo Montolivo.
“I am close to joining Milan,” Aquilani told Gazzetta dello Sport.
According to other sources AC Milan are ready to pay a fee of £7.7m to sign Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani and the indications are that the Anfield side will accept the offer and that the Italian international will be on his way to the Serie A side ahead of the start of the new season.
Kenny Dalglish clearly doesn’t see the former Roma man as part of his first team plans and the likes of Raul Meireles, Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam, Lucas and Steven Gerrard all stand ahead of Aquilani in the pecking order and as such it was always likely that 27 year old would be sold.
Alberto Aquilani spent last term at Juventus and did well but the Turin side were unwilling to meet Liverpool’s asking price and initially it appeared that AC Milan were only willing to offer £5.5m for a player who cost the Merseyside outfit £20m just two years ago.
Now the Rossoneri are willing to pay €10m (£8.7m) as boss Massimiliano Allegri looks to add to his midfield options having lost veteran Andrea Pirlo to Juventus. There is some speculation that any deal may initially involve a loan move but by all accounts Liverpool are looking to agree a permanent move as they look to balance the books having spent over £100m on new players in 2011.
